  7.     Power and celebrity are not necessarily buffers against the
  8. odd little vicissitudes of life. Accidents do happen. Ask any
  9. of the following notables:

  12.     Richard Darman. Bush's Budget Director usually tries to trip
  13. up congressional Democrats, but last week he slipped and fell
  14. on the steps of a McDonald's. It took 100 stitches to repair
  15. injuries to his head and face.
  16.  
  17.     Calvin Klein. The world-famous fashion designer apparently
  18. isn't cut out for the sporting life: he suffered a concussion,
  19. two broken ribs, a bruised lung and a head laceration after
  20. being thrown from a horse on Long Island last month.
  21.  
  22.     Dan Rather. The combative CBS News anchor suffered back
  23. injuries in 1986 when two men accosted him on New York City's
  24. Park Avenue and roughed him up while mysteriously demanding,
  25. "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"
  26.  
  27.     George Steinbrenner. The now deposed Yankee owner once said
  28. he encountered two loudmouthed Los Angeles Dodgers fans in an
  29. elevator. While he "clocked" them and broke his hand in the
  30. process, his victims were never identified.

  32.     Morton Downey Jr. The acerbic talk-show host claimed he was
  33. attacked in a San Francisco men's room by Nazi skinheads, who
  34. chopped off some of his hair and scrawled a swastika across his
  35. face. Skeptical officials made no arrests.
